Did Jurraf mention this period property floor had previously been aggressively sanded requiring wooden floor repairs?
This amazing period flooring once belonging to Lord Belper, couldn’t realistically take another heavy sand. To remove the previous ‘Orange’ stain. This vast area was worked by chemically removing the finish coat and light sanding to reveal the true beauty of the wood before a new finish was applied.
Types of period property flooring I work on
Victorian period flooring including geometric tiles, encaustic tiles, wooden floor boards. The Victorian era, spanning from 1837 to 1901, was characterised by significant advancements in technology and design
During this time, decorative elements, such as floor tiles, became increasingly popular. Victorian floor tiles were initially handcrafted, made from materials like ceramic and encaustic cement
Characteristics of original timber flooring
Material and Craftsmanship: Pine was the primary wood of choice due to its warm hue and availability. However, oak, mahogany, and other hardwoods were also used in affluent households. What made these boards unique was the craftsmanship. Carpenters of the Victorian era took immense pride in their work, ensuring tight joints, seamless, and intricate detailing.

sanding wooden floors
Some purists believe sanding wooden floors is too harsh. I agree in some circumstances, such as a rare untouched jewel. However, many floors have had crude cuts to modernise heating & electrical systems, matching these new boards inevitably means additional finishing work to match the originals and often the best course of action is to work the entire floor. In the case of this original school parquet, an unbelievable 24grit to remove the abundant carpet glue
Jurraf have had the privilege, often a shared excitement and trepidation with the client, in being the first ones to remove the carpet/ laminate/ underlay etc to see what lies underneath. I am mindful that the small inspection corner we just witnessed, is just one corner and far from the extent of the floor.
Having seen so much original timber flooring throughout my career, I can tell immediately if we have struck a good period property timber floor. Often the client is initially shocked or disappointed when we discover crude plumbing or electrical cuts to the boards, paint or historic repairs. Many of the issues are resolvable
